Our Story

MLN Investments LLC is an independent Registered Investment Advisor. We work with clients to build and manage custom portfolios to help achieve their financial goals. While MLN has been managing investments for clients on a discretionary basis since 2006, our real story begins in 1999; the year we began providing financial and investment advice to our clients.

We have always strived to maintain lasting relationships with our clients, and their loyalty has been our motivation to continue improving our business. We recognized early on that there was a polarization in the industry with expensive full-service brokers on one side and inexpensive no-frills brokers on the other. In order to serve our clients in the most efficient way that we could, we bridged the gap between the two by providing them with affordable service that was highly personalized.

Although we initially built our business as experienced option experts, our clients increasingly came to rely on our team for more traditional brokerage such as custom portfolio analysis, individual stock selection, and market research. The confidence and trust our clients placed in us is what really inspired us to create our own Registered Investment Advisor.

Our Founder

Our Founder

For 25 years, Michael E. Lavelle Jr. has been expertly engaged in many areas of the financial sector. Before co-founding MLN Investments, Michael was a market analyst with the Cincinnati Stock Exchange (1996), an enforcer of CBOE & SEC regulations at the Chicago Board Options Exchange (1997), and manager of the CBOE Investor Services Division (1998).  In 2000, Michael joined Man Securities as Vice President of Customer Services, implementing its first online trading system.

In 2004, Michael founded MLN Brokerage Services, focused primarily on self-directed retail trading.  After a few years, however, Michael realized that the self-directed investor in fact needed a great deal of direction.  By 2006, while continuing his successful brokerage services, he began to manage   investments for clients on a discretionary basis as an investment adviser representative of brokersXpress.  In May of 2012, Michael established MLN Investments LLC to offer investors a level of personal service that was missing from big name shops and discount online brokers.

Michael also has a diverse and well-rounded educational background that gives him a unique perspective to assist his clients. Michael holds a Juris Doctor from John Marshall Law School, a master’s degree in economic science from University College Dublin, and a Bachelor of Business Administration in Finance and Marketing from Loyola University of Chicago. Michael was admitted to Illinois State Bar in 2001. He holds Series 7, 63, 65, 55, 4, and 3 designations.

Growing up on the south side of Chicago, Michael has always enjoyed the hustle and bustle of urban life. However, some of his favorite past times, hiking and Philippine martial arts, involve the great outdoors. Michael currently resides in scenic and suburban Bolingbrook, Illinois, with his wife and two children, which allows him to enjoy the perfect combination of bustling social life and nature-focused adventure.
